Over 50 firefighters battle blaze in New Bedford

Here’s an update on the three-alarm fire on Granfield Street in New Bedford today.

According to New Bedford Fire Department’s Chief Gomes, there were heavy fires at 9 and 11 Granfield Street this afternoon – both structures were enveloped when firefighters arrived on the scene. The structures are only a few feet apart. Both buildings are a total loss.

Nine NBFD companies arrived to fight the fire with mutual aid from Dartmouth, Fairhaven and Acushnet fire departments. More than 50 firefighters fought the blaze and are still working on hot spots. Firefighters are expected to stay on the scene until midnight.

15 residents were displaced from several families – three people were transported to hospital due to smoke inhalation. There were no injuries to firefighters.

Initial reports are that the fire was started at the exterior of the homes.
