What does being a Big Brother mean to you? – The Story of Jack and Nigel

Big Brother Jack and Little Brother Nigel have been matched since September 2011.

“Coaching Nigel to apply and him becoming accepted at Nativity Prep was a genuine life-changer for him. He has accepted the challenge of being in an academically rigorous school and is well on his way to becoming a serious young scholar. His future is very much brighter as a result of his enrollment in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and I have little doubt that he will grow into a talented and productive young man.

Nigel’s horizons have expanded greatly since becoming a “Little Brother”. He now enjoys cooking and a more diverse range of foods and has developed a greater understanding of the importance of good nutrition. Also we frequent the library together and he settles into his personal favorite reading chair. This is a big gain for a kid who never really enjoyed reading.

Recreationally, we have mechanically rehabbed an abandoned bicycle and now enjoy trail riding together. He has experienced ice skating at the municipal rink and skiing at Mt. Wachusett. (The sense of awe and wonder at his first sight of a “mountain” was well worth the trip).

Nigel was also introduced to sailing and later participated in the school’s association with the Community Boating Center sailing program. One of the most memorable experiences was to see the utter joy and excitement on his face when he caught his very first fish (a rather spritely – if slightly under-sized scup).

I have come to realize that there are very few things in life as rewarding as helping a young person grow into the potential which they deserve. Big Brothers Big Sisters has become in a way, a life changer for me also.”

Best wishes for your much needed work and your continued success,
Jack
