Weymouth police officer Michael Chesna and an elderly woman died early Sunday morning from gunshot wounds when the suspect, Emmanuel Lopes, took the officer’s gun and fired following a vehicle crash and a foot chase. Officials say an unidentified elderly woman also died after being hit by stray bullets in a nearby home.
Massachusetts State Police Colonel Kerry A. Gilpin released the following statement regarding this morning’s homicides of Officer Chesna and a bystander in Weymouth
“On behalf of the Massachusetts State Police, I offer our deepest condolences to the family of Officer Chesna, the family of the Weymouth woman who was also killed, and the Weymouth Police Department. The State Police Detective Unit for Norfolk County, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Ballistics Section, and our State Police Crime Lab will work tirelessly alongside District Attorney Morrissey and the Weymouth Police Department to speak for these two victims by holding the defendant accountable for these horrific crimes.”
