“Marion Portuguese man o’ war sighting!

Please keep a watchful eye while enjoying a swim or boating in and around Marion waters, along with Buzzards Bay!

“The Town of Marion is advising residents and visitors to be aware of Portuguese man o’ war (a type of stinging jellyfish) that have been found ashore.

These creatures are known for their painful stings and can be found in warm ocean waters around the world.

What to look for:

• Portuguese man o’ war is typically found floating in the water, and can be identified by their blue, violet, or pink balloon-like float.
• They also have long, trailing tentacles that can reach up to 100 feet in length.

If you are stung:

• If you are stung by a Portuguese man o’ war, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. The sting can cause severe pain, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.

Treatment:
There is no specific treatment for a Portuguese man o’ war sting, but there are some things you can do to relieve the pain and symptoms. These include:

• Removing any tentacles that may be attached to your skin.
• Applying a cold compress to the affected area.
• Taking over-the-counter pain medication.
• Drinking plenty of fluids.

Prevention:
• The best way to prevent a Portuguese man o’ war sting is to avoid swimming in areas where they are known to be present.
• If you must swim in these areas, be sure to wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and gloves.
• You should also avoid touching any floating objects in the water.

A Portuguese man o’ war may still sting you even weeks after having washed ashore.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Marion Health Department at (508) 748-3530.”-Marion Harbormaster Department.
