Two men arrested in New Bedford with two kilos of cocaine worth over $200,000

New Bedford Narcotics Division took two kilos of cocaine with a street value of more than $200,000 off the streets Thursday and charged two men with trafficking in the drug following an investigation led by Detective Jonathan Lagoa into cocaine distribution.

Ramon Alvarez Melendez, 39, of 18 Ashley St. Apt. 3, New Bedford, and Jose Gomez, 34, of 24 Warren St. Apt. 2, New Bedford, were each charged with trafficking in cocaine over 1,000 grams and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

The men were stopped at about 10:26 a.m. in their vehicle near Route 18 and Cove Street. As a result of the stop, detectives located two kilos of cocaine and a small amount of cash in the vehicle.

The two men were scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Third District Court.
