Milton Brightman’s painting “The Crucible” (New Bedford harbor, Summer), oil on oak, 8″ x 10.
Billowing clouds, ominous perhaps, on the horizon; a group of teenagers diving and jumping into the water off the pier that adjoins the boat ramp on Rodney French Boulevard. The sound of thunder announces the presence of storms in the distance. A moment in time, during the sweltering summer months in New Bedford, and near the end of the day, in advance of a soft sultry summer’s night, I sit in my car, drinking beer, and contemplating existence. Oil on oak, 22″ x 26.”- Michael Brightman.

PETER MICHAEL MARTIN BIOGRAPHY:
Peter Michael Martin is an artist and educator. Peter retired from teaching on his birthday in January in 2009 after 35 years as a Special Education Teacher. Peter holds both a Bachelor of Science as well as a Masters Degree from Bridgewater State University and is certified in both Special Education and Art. During his last 10 years of teaching Peter was able to integrate art as an alternate form of assessment for students while co-teaching high school biology.

Peter is an established Paper Cut Artist with years of representations in both galleries and museums. Many of his designs incorporate a littoral iconography taken mostly from nature that reflects his coastal residency.

January 3, 2014 an exhibit of Peter’s large scale paper and fiber cuts titled Martin & Moby was held at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford, Massachusetts. The opening coincided with the 18th Moby Dick Marathon Reading. His inspiration for this project was from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. The exhibit was open through the month of June with the arrival of the Charles W. Morgan in New Bedford Harbor.

In June of 2015 Peter presented his Martin & Moby collection at the 10th International Melville Conference in Tokyo, Japan.

In Addition to his paper and fiber cuts Peter creates White-line woodcut prints.

During the summer of 2009 Peter studied white-line woodcut printing with Bill Evaul in Provincetown, Massachusetts. White-line printing or Provincetown Print as it is known was created in 1915 at Provincetown by B.J.O. Nordfeldt. Peter has embraced this medium as a complement to his paper cutting. Peter has found this colorful medium a graceful way to interpret both New England as well as New Mexico of which he has been a regular visitor since 1974.

Peter works in his studio located in the Historic Standard Times building in Downtown New Bedford.
