South Coast Weekend Guide (August 19-21)

This weekend, expect typical New England summer weather: warm temps, scattered thunderstorms, and partly cloudy skies.  There is a chance of storms on both Friday and Saturday, and skies should be clear by Sunday.  Temperatures will range from 79°F to 82°F.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 19

Tickets went on sale today for the upcoming release of Jay Burke’s Whaling City Film.  The film is scheduled for a one-time showing at the Zeiterion Theatre on 24 September at 8 p.m. Get your tickets now because they are going fast! Full details here.

Want to enjoy the evening outdoors? Take a short trip to Providence, Rhode Island to visit the Roger Williams Park Zoo (1000 Elmwood Ave., Providence) for their ZooARTyssey.  Explore the zoo and experience the animals while being entertained by performance artists and live music!  This event is appropriate for all ages, and there will be beer and wine available for sale for adults.  Tickets are $15 for Adults, and $10 for Children and Seniors. From Roger Williams Park Zoo: “Enjoy an unforgettable experience as you journey through Roger Williams Park Zoo on a summer evening during the magical sunset hours and discover enchanting and engaging living art characters created by Rhode Island’s renowned performance artists, TEN31 Productions.  Enjoy the living art as well as all the animals on exhibit and live music.  Delicious food and an array of beverages including beer and wine will also be available for purchase.

Enjoy a concert when Mary Chapin Carpenter plays at The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center Friday night.  The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are available HERE.

From The Z: “Mary Chapin Carpenter has always chosen her own path. From her first gigs as a rising star on Washington D.C.’s folk scene in the early 1980s, she has made a reputation as both a singer and songwriter with a mind of her own.  Over the course of her recording career, Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards and sold over 13 million records.  She has scored 12 top 10 singles, including “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” which was nominated for a Record of the Year Grammy.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 20

Whaling City Clippers play at New Bedford High School starting at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. is Operation Clean Sweep hosted by the Whaling City Clippers Football team.  Lunch pizza will be provided by Domino’s Pizza.  People are asked to meet-up at Keith Middle School to pick-up equipment and get your assigned areas.  Tools and gloves are provided.  Pre-register at www.operationcleansweep.net or call 508.979.1493.  Catch the Whaling City Clippers kick off the second half of their football season at New Bedford High School starting at 6:30 p.m.  General admission is $5, $3 for senior citizens and active duty military, veterans and children under 12-years old get in for free.

Saturday is the beginning of second (and last!) weekend of an incredible annual, local event, the South Coast Artist’s Open Studio Tour 2011.  This is the 8th year of this very special event in our area that showcases the artistic talent and creativity of many of our local residents.  The South Coast Artist’s Open Studio Tour 2011 is a self-guided tour that travels across highways and through rural and farm landscapes; exhibiting art in Tiverton, RI, Little Compton, RI, Dartmouth, MA and Westport, MA.  Along this tour will be many different local artists opening up their studios for exclusive tours of their one-of-a-kind artworks.  The tour is free to the public, and all ages are welcome.

From South Coast Artists: “This is your chance to visit the studios of some of the best artists living, working and exhibiting in the four beautiful coastal towns of Tiverton, Little Compton, Westport and Dartmouth….Along the way you’ll discover the work of welcoming artists working in such diverse mediums as oils, acrylics, watercolors, photography, sculpture, basketry, fiber arts, ceramics, glass, wood, metal, jewelry, paper and mixed media.  All you have to do is follow the map in the brochure and look for the blue and white Open Studio signs and windsocks marking each studio or gallery.”

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21

The J.Kelley Band plays at Down The Hatch Friday and Ice Chest on Sunday.

Sunday is the very last day to enjoy the South Coast Artist’s Open Studio Tour 2011. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to support local artists.

Sleep in and enjoy a late brunch or lunch date at Cork Wine and Tapas (90 Front St.) or Dog Day Sundays with your BFF (best furry friend) at Hibernia Irish Pub (109 William St.).

For music, J Kelley will be performing at the Ice Chest (136 Huttleston Ave., Fairhaven) from 4-8 p.m. Or check out Sunday Night Jam Session at Pour Farm (780 Purchase St); starting at 7pm and hosted by local musician Matt Antunes.
