Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced today that a 41-year-old Providence man was sentenced to serve four to seven years in state prison after being convicted in Superior Court of trafficking heroin in New Bedford.

In July of 2014, New Bedford Police Narcotics Unit detectives were wrapping up an extensive investigation into a heroin distribution operation that was utilizing a van as a central base for pickups and deliveries of heroin. On the morning of July 8, 2014, Edison Perez-Lara was seen by police moving the van onto Stowell Street.

After exiting the van, the defendant was approached by police and was found to be in possession of about 60 grams of heroin. The van was subsequently searched, and another 60 grams of heroin was found behind the glove box.

On Thursday, Mr. Perez-Lara pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court to a single count indictment charging him with trafficking in excess of 18 grams of heroin, and was sentenced by Judge Renee Dupuis to serve four to seven years in state prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Patrick Driscoll.
