OPINION: “Why does New Bedford’s Zeiterion get $31 million while the Orpheum crumbles away?”

The following is an opinion sent to New Bedford Guide. It does not reflect the opinion of New Bedford Guide, nor is it an OP-ED. In fairness and objectivity, we share opinions from our readers whether we agree or disagree with their opinion.

“I understand that the Zeiterion Theatre received $31 million to remodel and update the theatre. I can’t see where that is needed unless there are issues with the building that I’m not aware of.

But what really gets me is the Old Orpheum Theatre sitting there crumbling away. It’s so sad to see this beautiful building with trees growing out of its facade and the bricks coming loose.

This place would be a great arts center or a cultural center. I really wish the city would do something to save this Grand Old Lady before it’s too late and then we will be crying we should have done something to save it.” -Bob Marshall.

  1. I completely agree with the disproportionate amount of support for the Z while the Orpheum falls further into despair and disrepair !!!! I have seen pictures of the inside of the O and it is amazing piece of history !! When this city is the future hotspot of the state…. The leaders who ignored saving it will have this blemish of disregard resting solely on them !!!!

  2. We get infrastructure monies and grants and it is always spent foolishly. The city could spend the money on redesigning sum of our roads like county street between linden and sawyer streets. The city could also bring awareness to the rusting away 195 overpass to the State that has become a major eyesoar. Things like this takes away from our city. Can only blame those in our city government. Maybe if there is any money left, we will get some grease for the much needed replacement and design of the New Bedford/Fairhaven Bridge.
