New Bedford Public Schools welcomes two new head coaches

Athletics Dept. names Kristen Scotti, Girls Soccer, and Brian Coon, Boys Wrestling.

New Bedford Public Schools Athletic Department has named two new head coaches at New Bedford High School for the 2022-2023 School Year: Kristen Scotti, Girls Soccer Head Coach and Brian W. Coon, Boys Wrestling Head Coach, Thomas Tarpey, Director of Athletics announced today. The new coaches have extensive experience in their respective sports and as New Bedford Public School educators, recently expressed how their motivation stems from their esteem and affection for their students.

Kristen Scotti
Head Coach, NBHS Girls Soccer

An ELA teacher at New Bedford High School, Kristen Scotti previously taught high school English for 10 years in New London, Connecticut, where she coached Girls Soccer for three years, becoming Head Coach in 2017. Coach Scotti pursued soccer throughout her academic years; first at Ponaganset High School where she played girls varsity soccer all four years, then at the University of Rhode Island, where she played girls intramural soccer and co-Ed indoor soccer during and after her undergraduate years. She obtained her Secondary English Teaching License at Providence College.

In announcing her appointment, Thomas Tarpey said, “I am excited that Coach Scotti is taking over as the Head Girls Soccer Coach as she brings varsity coaching experience and an unmatched enthusiasm for the game. She is in the building and will be able to develop relationships with our girls beyond the field. We are very lucky to have her.”

Coach Scotti stated, “I am so grateful to be joining the Whaler family and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach such an incredible team of committed, talented, exceptional young ladies in the fall. I cannot wait to see all their success on the field and am proud to help contribute to building an amazing girls’ soccer program here at New Bedford High.”

Brian W. Coon
Head Coach, NBHS Boys Wrestling

A physical education teacher at Hayden McFadden Elementary School, Coach Coon’s wrestling experience goes back throughout his high school and college years. He was wrestling captain and 4-year Varsity Wrestler at Webster High School in Western, NY, where he was also a 4-Time Greco national qualifier, 4-time Freestyle national qualifier, 2-time Western NY Empire state games representative and a member of the USA Wrestling High School International Travel Team. Coach Coon continued his wrestling career at Niagara County College where he was a 2-time JUCO National Championship Qualifier. He has served as Varsity Wrestling Coach at Lake City, South Carolina, and for the New Bedford Sharks Youth Wrestling Club.

In announcing the appointment, Tom Tarpey said, “We could not be happier that Brian accepted the job with such enthusiasm. Coach Coon has the leadership and ability to continue the tradition and success of our program as one of the top in the state every year. In addition to his wrestling knowledge, Coach Coon is an incredible mentor to young men and is committed to helping them grow as individuals and achieve as a team. His connection to students is outstanding, and I am excited for the future of the program.”

Coach Coon stated, “I am truly honored and excited to take on the role of head coach for the New Bedford High School wrestling team. To become part of a well-established program, led by its coaches and athletes, with a reputation for success both on and off the mat is a dream come true. I intend for my leadership style to encourage continued growth as well as guide its participants in such a way as to help all involved reach their true potentials.”
