New Bedford Police Department Welcomes Public to Meet New Commander of Downtown Station

New Bedford Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro has announced that Captain Derek Belong has been assigned to the position of Commander of Station One, located on Pleasant Street in Downtown New Bedford. Prior to his recent appointment as Chief of the New Bedford Police Department, Chief Cordeiro served for ten years as Commander of Station One.

On Tuesday, June 21, 2016 between the hours of 10:00AM and 12:00PM, the New Bedford Police Department invites the public to Station One (572 Pleasant Street) to meet Captain Belong.

Captain Belong is looking forward to the opportunity to meet citizens, business owners and anyone who wants to stop by and greet him. Captain Belong may be reached at Station One at (508) 991-6340 or at derek.belong@newbedfordpd.com.

The public will be invited to a similar meet and greet opportunity at Station Two (South End- Cove Street) in the coming weeks.

“The meet and greet opportunity is an important first step in our efforts to further develop the community policing philosophy throughout the New Bedford Police Department. We are committed to growing the Department’s relationship with the community so that ultimately, residents and police officers perceive each other as the same, and work collaboratively as a city of one,” said New Bedford Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro.

In addition, Chief Cordeiro has announced Lt. Amos Melo will serve as the Administrative Assistant to the Office of the Chief of Police. Lt. Melo is a twenty-seven year veteran of the New Bedford Police Department and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. His previous assignments with the Department over the years have included serving in the Uniform Patrol Division at every station in the city, as a Detective in the Organized Crime and Intelligence Bureau, and as a Sergeant in Professional Standards Division, Juvenile/Sexual Assault Division and Domestic Violence Unit. Lt. Melo has also served as a Supervisor for Station One and previously led the School Resource Officer Division.
