Yesterday afternoon at approximately 4pm officers were sent to the area of Walnut St. and Acushnet Ave. regarding a vehicle that had fallen on a male pinning him. Upon arrival officers found the victim underneath a Honda Accord that had the front passenger tire removed. He was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital and pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.

The victim was working underneath the car that was not his own. The vehicle had been supported by a hydraulic lift jack and two portable jack stands. At one point, it appears that one of the jacks gave way and the vehicle came down on top of him as he repaired it from underneath.

It is not known at this time exactly what type of repairs were being conducted.

The incident is still under investigation by Det. Michael Carrier, being assisted by members of the State Police assigned to the District Attorney’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for later on today and the incident does not appear suspicious at the time. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Carrier at 508-991-6300 ext. 79512.

The victim is a 49 year old New Bedford man who lived near the location of the incident.
