Last night at approximately 6:45pm north end units and the fire department were dispatched to 28 Bentley St. on a basement fire. The suspect had gathered some clothing and other items in an area an set them on fire. A couple of families in the home were alerted by smoke alarms and made it out safely. There were no injuries but the families needed to be displaced. Assistance was obtained and received by the Red Cross.

Officers, fire investigators, and detectives began interviewing people in the neighborhood.

It was learned that the suspect was in the area earlier playing street football with youths. An argument ensued and he left the area only to return later asking about the whereabouts of these same people. A witness saw him going into the rear of the home and return a short time later before running from the scene. (He had a cigarette lighter with him.) It was at this time that the fire was detected.

Officers continued to search the area and at approximately 9:30pm spotted him on nearby Sawyer St. He was taken into custody and will be arraigned this morning in New Bedford district court. He is facing charges of Breaking and Entering and Arson.
