Last night at approximately 10pm north end officers were sent to the HI-Lo gas station at 2790 Acushnet Ave. in New Bedford regarding an armed robbery. The clerk was not harmed.

The suspect entered the store wearing a black ski mask and sunglasses while armed with a knife. He demanded money from the register and at one point took the entire cash tray and fled on foot. (The knife was recovered at the store after being dropped by the suspect.) Several witnesses followed him over to Victoria Street where the cash tray was later found on the sidewalk. The suspect was last seen running in that area and escaped. The ski mask, gloves, sunglasses, and some clothing, was recovered from a relative’s home that the suspect had initially fled to.

At approximately 1 am officers Dennis Morris and Michael Cassidy responded to the 1200 block of Church St. regarding suspicious activity. Upon arrival they found the suspect matching the description from the robbery and he was placed under arrest.

Scheduled to be arraigned this morning in New Bedford district court on a charge of armed robbery while masked;
