Mayor Jon Mitchell, City officials and members of the Friends of Buttonwood Park officially opened the park’s six new tennis courts, including five pickleball courts, on Friday afternoon.
The extensive renovation of the tennis courts, long the center of recreational tennis in Greater New Bedford, is part of the City’s continued improvements of parks and public spaces to enhance quality of life in the city. The renovated courts are the result of a $102,730 investment by the City, with the support of the City Council, as well as a generous donation of $28,00 for new fencing by longtime New Bedford resident and physician Dr. Paul Chervinsky.
Mayor Mitchell, joined by Director of Parks, Recreation & Beaches Mary Rapoza, also thanked former Ward 5 City Councillor Kerry Winterson and current Ward 5 City Councillor Scott Lima for their continued advocacy on behalf of maintaining and improving the public spaces at and around Buttonwood Park.
The new tennis courts, which were designed and installed with the consultation of the United States Tennis Association and specialist contractor Hinding Tennis, also include pickleball courts. Pickleball is a fast-growing racquet sport similar to tennis but utilizes a smaller court and net.
