At approximately 4:45 p.m. yesterday members of the Massachusetts State Police were requested by the Wilmington Police Department to assist in the investigation of a crash involving a privately owned vehicle and one of their police cruisers.
Just before the crash a Wilmington Police Cruiser was en route to an emergency call involving an assault in progress that was reported to be escalating in severity. The cruiser involved in the crash was the last of three Wilmington Police Cruisers traveling in series, all with lights and sirens activated, and were traveling eastbound in the left lane of Concord Street approaching the intersection of the Route 93 northbound ramps. The other vehicle involved in the crash, a 2013 Infinity G37 operated by a 57-year-old man from Grafton, was traveling westbound on Concord Street attempting to turn left onto the Route 93 northbound on ramp.
After the first two Wilmington Police Cruisers passed through the intersection, the Infinity turned left into the path of the third Wilmington Police Cruiser. The Infinity and the third Wilmington Police Cruiser were involved in a collision at that time. The Infinity then struck an overhead light pole.
The crash resulted in minor injuries to both operators, who were subsequently transported to an area hospital by EMS. The operator of the Infinity was issued a civil citation for Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. No further information is available.
