At approximately 7:54 p.m. yesterday, Massachusetts State Troopers assigned to State Police-Concord responded to reports of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle on Route 3 northbound, prior to exit 78, in Billerica.

Preliminary investigation indicated that 43-year-old Joseph Francois of Hyde Park was a passenger in a 2016 Chevy Equinox operated by a 50-year-old Lowell woman. The Chevy pulled in the breakdown lane and Francois got out of the vehicle and went into the roadway for reasons still under investigation. Francois was then hit by a 2016 Ford F-150 operated by a 25-year-old Billerica man. All operators remained on scene.

The passenger was determined to be deceased at the scene.

The facts and circumstances of the crash, including why Francois got out of the Chevy, remains under investigation by State Police-Concord, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Middlesex County.

No charges have been filed at this time.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the A Troop Community Action Team, Massachusetts DOT, Billerica PD and Billerica FD. Route 3 northbound was closed for the investigation, all travel lanes were closed with traffic using the high speed breakdown lane. The lanes were closed for 2 hours.
