Massachusetts Cultural Council awards $1 million to New Bedford organizations

The Massachusetts Cultural Council has awarded over $1 million in Cultural Facilities Fund grants to several local organizations.

• $500,000 to the New Bedford Whaling Museum for a new education center to expand programming needs.
• $440,000 to the New Bedford Port Society to restore the Seamen’s Bethel and Mariner’s Home as a Fishing Heritage Center that will enable visitors and school children to learn about the city’s maritime history.
• $30,000 to the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum, to address immediate and long term preservation and restoration needs.
• $20,000. To Your Theatre for a feasibility study to acquire and restore the First Baptist Church for a permanent theatre and offices.
• $7,000 to Gallery X for systems replacement plan.
• $30,000 to The Lloyd Center in South Dartmouth to complete a comprehensive facilities expansion and capital campaign plan.

“These projects will expand access to the arts, history and education while creating much needed jobs in construction and tourism,” said Senator Montigny who has been a longtime leader in transforming downtown New Bedford into an arts & cultural district.

The Cultural Facilities Fund is jointly administered by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the MassDevelopment. The grants must be matched with funds from private philanthropy and/or other public sources.
