Statement from Mayor Jon Mitchell on the incident outside of Jalice Cafe on Saturday August 2, 2014:

“First of all, I am grateful that none of the injuries suffered as a result of this incident were life-threatening. We will not tolerate this sort of violence in our community. The City is taking swift, direct action with respect to the bar involved in the incident. The Police Department has ordered the establishment closed this evening, and the Licensing Board will hold a hearing on Wednesday evening to determine the role of the bar and whether sanctions are appropriate. In the meantime, the Police Department has made this investigation its top priority, and is actively pursuing every lead to apprehend those responsible for the incident.”

  1. I also heard a man was nearly beaten to death….same night, at another bar and was med flighted to a boston hospital! why is there no news on this? I also heard that from a personal friend that the victim of the stabbing in the southend, the one where he walked into the police station, didn’t make it…making that a homicide! Where’s the news on that one too? any info would be much appreciated. Would like to no what’s going on in this city, but it seems they try to hide everything to get tourists and money here! What they seem to be forgetting is if you hide the problem…and the public doesn’t know the full extent of these crimes and violence…then they think there is nothing to fix, and so the problem is never solved…

    • Sean…I’m assuming that you would like to “know” what’s going on. Also glad to hear that you have a “personal” friend as opposed to what I don’t know. (or no).
Don’t believe everything you hear or read Sean.

    • I run NewBedfordGuide as the SOLE news person. Most news agencies in the area have staff of dozens if not hundreds of people. We rely mostly on tips from the public and when have time we put out a story. I’ll look into this story. Feel free to send us as much details as possible to inf@newbedfordguide.com.

  2. Your absolutely right Sean. I am a friend of the family of the man who was beaten in a bar near the feast and med-flighted to Boston. I kept waiting to hear about that incident, but nope! People pick and choose what “news” they want to report in this city so as to keep the light off of the community deemed to be the most important here. What a shame.
