2014 Christmas & Holiday Event Guide – December’s community events

The following community events will take place throughout the south coast, Massachusetts area during the month of December:

December 1st

Fairhaven Town Hall Toy and Food Drive
December 1, 2014, to mid-December
Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, December 13, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Town Hall, 40 Center Street, Fairhaven

The Fairhaven Town Hall is partnering with the United Way and the New Bedford Firefighters’ Union to bring Christmas presents to area children in need. This toy drive will run from December 1 to mid-December. New, unwrapped toys may be dropped in the donation box. Make a toy donation a part of your family’s annual Old-Time Holiday Weekend, as the toy donation box will be available at the Town Hall on Saturday, December 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., to coincide with Town-wide festivities. The Town Hall is also a drop-off location for the ongoing United Way food drive. Please consider bringing non-perishable foods, such as canned meats, beans, peanut butter, etc. for the Town Hall collection bin. Handicap accessible. Library Movie Night: “The Naked Kiss”

THE NAKED KISS (1964) – The setup is pure pulp: A former prostitute (a crackerjack Constance Towers) relocates to a buttoned-down suburb, determined to fit in with mainstream society. But in the strange, hallucinatory territory of writer-director-producer Samuel Fuller, perverse secrets simmer beneath the wholesome surface. Starring Constance Towers. 1 hour, 30 minutes. December 4th

Dartmouth High School Presents: A Christmas Carol – Scrooge & Marlkey
Come and join Dartmouth High Theatre Company for an evening filled with holiday magic and delight! December 4, 5, & 6 at 7:00 pm – December 6 at 2:00 pm. Tickets:Adults $12.00 – Students/Seniors $10.00

December 5th

Cove Street Neighborhood Group Tree Lighting
Date and Time: Friday, December 5th at 5:30 p.m.
Location: Park on the corner of Ruth Street and Salisbury Street.

The North Fairhaven Improvement Association will light the decorated square and welcome Santa Claus to North Fairhaven. Free.

Christmas Concert
Friday, December 5, 2014, 7:00 p.m.

New Bedford to Celebrate the Holiday Season with Many Festive Community Events!

December 6th

Downtown New Bedford Holiday Stroll
Date and Time: Saturday, December 6th and Sunday, December 7th from noon to 4 p.m.
Location: Downtown New Bedford

During the first weekend in December, Downtown New Bedford will be bustling with holiday spirit, shoppers, families and festive activities. On Saturday, December 6th and Sunday, December 7th from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. Downtown New Bedford Inc., will present the Annual Downtown New Bedford Holiday Stroll. Artisans, crafters, restaurants, specialty shops and boutiques will come together to create a unique holiday shopping experience. The two-day event is organized by Downtown New Bedford Inc., and aims to encourage holiday shoppers to buy local. http://www.downtownnb.org/

City of New Bedford Official Christmas Tree Lighting
Date and Time: Saturday, December 6th at 4:30 p.m.
Location: City Hall Plaza

Join Mayor Jon Mitchell and Elected Officials for this festive annual event!
At 4:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will join the New Bedford High School and All-City Middle School Marching Bands and Color Guard for a parade up William Street to the Library steps. At 5:00 p.m. Mayor Jon Mitchell will welcome all for the City’s official Tree Lighting Ceremony. New this year – special entertainment and a holiday surprise!

Safe Zones 4th Annual Fill The Bus Toy Drive (December 6th)
“Safe Zones 4th Annual Fill The Bus Toy Drive in partnership with the New Bedford Police Department & Tremblay’s Bus 8AM-8PM”. Our goal is to fill 3 school buses with toys for our most neediest family’s in our city {PRESCHOOL – 12 GRADE} – Our 3 locations where you’ll be able to bring your donation to on December 6th are (Main Police Station @ 871-Rockdale Ave)-(Police Stations 2 -168 Cove St)-(Police Stations 3 -781 Ashley Blvd).

December 7th

Festival of Lights Celebration at Clasky Common Park
Date and Time: Sunday, December 7th at 5:00 p.m.
Location: Clasky Common Park at County and Pope Streets

Join the countdown celebration to illuminate festive displays of dazzling lights throughout Clasky Common Park. Members of the Parker Elementary School chorus will perform and Santa Claus is expected to join the celebration.

Far North End Neighborhood Association Tree Lighting
Date and Time: Sunday, December 7th at 6:15 p.m.
Location: Fire Station # 5, 3665 Acushnet Avenue

Freetown Christmas Tree Lighting
Residents can celebrate the holiday season at the town’s annual Christmas tree lighting, which will be held on Dec. 7 at the Assonet Four Corners Village Bandstand on South Main Street. Each child in attendance may bring one decoration to place on a community Christmas tree. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m., featuring an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Hot chocolate and Dunkin Donuts Munchkins will be served.

Home for the Holidays – Zeiterion Theatre 
American Big Band – Home for the Holidays

The best of American big band comes to The Z stage this December for a Christmas showcase of all of the holiday favorites. An explosive synthesis of big band and Broadway, American Big Band features a 12- piece orchestra and eight singers and dancers in a music extravaganza perfect for the whole family. AJ Gomes School Neighborhood Association Tree Lighting (December 9th)
Tuesday, 6:00 p.m., A.J. Gomes School Neighborhood Association Tree Lighting, at Montes Park, corner of Russell Street and Acushnet Avenue.Santa Claus is coming to town with Mrs. Claus for this special occasion to visit with all of the girls and boys around 6:30pm

December 10th

Harrington Park Tree Lighting
Date and Time: Wednesday, December 10th at 6:30 p.m.
Location: Harrington Park located at Court Street and Tremont Street (across from Hathaway School)

Rockdale Avenue Neighborhood Association Tree Lighting Ceremony 
Wednesday, 6:30pm, the Rockdale Avenue Neighborhood Association Tree Lighting Ceremony, Harrington Park, on the corner of Court and Tremont Streets (across from the Hathaway School.) Santa Claus is ccomingto town with Mrs. Claus for this special occasion to visit with all of the girls and boys around 6:45pm.

December 11th

South End Business Association Tree Lighting
Date and Time: Thursday, December 11th 4:15 p.m. book reading, 5:30 p.m. tree lighting
Location: Howland Green Library, 3 Rodney French Boulevard

Ashley Park Tree Lighting
Date: Thursday, December 11th at 6:30 p.m.
Location: Ashley Park on the corner of Rivet Street and Bolton Street

December 13th

Bullard Street Neighborhood Association Tree Lighting
Date: Saturday, December 13th at 6:30 p.m.
Location: Riverside Park on the corner of Belleville Avenue and Tallman Street

Custom House Square Holiday Celebration
Dates: Saturday, December 13th and Saturday, December 20th
Location: Custom House Square (Intersection of William Street and Acushnet Avenue in the Historic Downtown)

Get ready for the holiday season with an array of holiday activities in Custom House Square. Including: Free horse drawn carriage rides (12-2pm & 3-5pm), carolers in the Historic District (12 – 1:30 pm), visit with Santa Claus (1-3pm). Take pictures on the big red sled and experience many more activities!

A Christmas Carol 2014 – Zeiterion Theatre
Saturday, December 13, 2PM & 7PM

This beloved production with outstanding sets and lavish costumes from the nationally touring Nebraska Theater Caravan has become the gem of New Bedford’s holiday traditions. Starring miserly old Ebenezer Scrooge, this classic tale of love, generosity and the Spirit of Christmas stirs the hearts of audience members young and old. Old-Time Holiday Weekend in Fairhaven

Fairhaven Town Hall Shops

Town Hall, 40 Center St., Fairhaven

Non-profit and church groups have booths to sell holiday related items and more. Some of the organizations with tables are: VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Whitfield-Manjiro Friendship Society, Church of the Good Shepherd, Fairhaven Village Militia, and others. Entertainment provided by Fairhaven music students. There will also be a drop boxes for new, unwrapped toys to be given to the area’s needy children and for the United Way food drive. Free. The Brick Church Fair
Saturday, December 13, 2014, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
First Congregational Church, 34 Center Street

The church will be alive with activity. Craft Vendors, Baked Goods, Cookies, Home Cooking, Vermont Cheddar Cheese, Chance Auction, Silent Auction, Coffee Shop and much more. We will be raffling off a custom made rocking horse. The “Heavenly Treasures,” second-hand shop will be open all day. Lobster roll luncheon will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or until sold out. Chowder and hotdogs will also be available. Handicap accessible. Unitarian Church Holiday Marketplace

Unitarian Memorial Church parish house, 102 Green Street, Fairhaven

The Unitarian Church parish house will be the site stress-free shopping with a variety of fine crafters’ booths, baked goods and the Women’s Alliance holiday greens. Festive holiday music, a visit from St. Nicholas and a Christmas tree decorated with love will spread holiday cheer throughout the halls. Free Admission. Handicap accessible. Wrapping Paper Making , Art Show, and Sale

Art on Center with have lots of materials on hand for you to design and make your own holiday wrapping paper. There will also be cookies and hot chocolate and an art exhibit of small works by Art on Center members. You’ll find a fantastic selection of artwork priced for holiday giving. Unitarian Memorial Church Sanctuary Tours

Holiday Soup and Sandwich Luncheon

December 14th

Annual Santa Sightings 5K Fun Run and Walk!
Date and Time: Sunday, December 14th at 11:00 a.m.
Location: Race starts at City Hall in Downtown New Bedford, 133 William Street

Old-Time Christmas Carol Sing

A Christmas Celtic Sojourn with Brian O’Donovan is now in its second decade and has established itself as a holiday tradition gem throughout New England. December 19th

MIMO Christmas Caroling in the West End

Buttonwood Park (Southeast corner of Rockdale Avenue and Hawthorn Street)

Come spread joy and cheer in the West End! Lyrics and candles will be provided. Festive attire is encouraged. We will be caroling down Hawthorne St. and stopping at a few homes to drop off cookies and holiday cards. ALL ages are welcome! Read more here.

December 20th

Pictures with Santa
Saturday, December 20 from 10:00am – 2:00pm
New Bedford Negotiables  (01 West Rodney French Blvd, Door 4 2nd Floor, New Bedford)

Photos with Santa is open for all families. Even families with furry children! There will be treats and drinks available for a small price. Proceeds from the treats and drinks will be donated to Russ Chamberlain to benefit Mercy Meals during the holiday season.

NBSO Family Holiday Pops 2014

The NBSO’s Family Holiday Pops Concerts are bursting with magical moments! With holiday music we all love played by a great orchestra, friends and family sharing the joy of the season, and festive holiday decorations, it’s no wonder this concert is a South Coast holiday tradition! The children’s matinee at 3:30 will feature a fun, interactive activity while the 7:00 performance offers a few more carols for a slightly longer concert experience; each child attending either concert receives a gift.
