Four families displaced after explosion, fire in New Bedford

There was an explosion and fire this afternoon at 117 Summit Street in Parkdale Housing at 2:15 pm today . New Bedford Fire Department fighters reported a significant fire on the second floor and windows blown out when they arrived. They quickly controlled the fire and extinguished it.

The 56-year old resident suffered serious burns to his face and was transported to Rhode Island for treatment. As result of this explosion, gas was turned off to 4 other apartments in the complex. These families will be temporarily placed in other units by the Housing Authority.

It is unclear at this time what triggered the explosion. The case remains under investigation by New Bedfprd Police detectives and New Bedford Fire Department investigators.
