Commissioners unanimously call seasoned merchant mariner with experience in yarmouth and steamship authority “extremely well suited.”

The Port of New Bedford has moved closer to bringing on board a new Harbormaster, as the Port’s governing body, the Harbor Development Commission, and Mayor Jon Mitchell have agreed on David Condon as a candidate to fill the position.

The position has remained vacant as legislation advanced to change the term of the position from a life-time appointment to a term of up to five years with an opportunity for renewal. That bill, supported by the Mayor, City Council, and local legislators was approved by the Massachusetts Legislature in 2014. Under the law, the City Council must also approve the appointment.

In a letter to the Council, Mayor Jon Mitchell encouraged prompt consideration, “Given the approaching summer boating season and the increase in harbor activity, I am respectfully requesting that the Council expedite its consideration. Having a harbormaster on duty during this critical period will go a long way towards ensuring the continued positive momentum of our Port.”

Condon, a native of Cape Cod, will relocate to New Bedford. He is an experienced deck officer who spent a decade sailing tank ships valued in excess of $500 million on domestic and international routes. He has also held positions at the Steamship Authority and as Assistant Harbormaster in Yarmouth. He is a 2005 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
