Downtown New Bedford comes alive this Thursday, August 13, at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. The park will offer a free concert from 6:30-7:30 PM, featuring Joao Cerilo and Pilon Batuku playing Cape Verdean dance music. Ruth and Abby, the national park’s 1850s ladies, will take the public on a trip through time along New Bedford’s cobblestone streets on their special walking tour. The tour, which begins promptly at 7:00 PM, is filled with stories of the people of 19th century New Bedford.
At ease with both traditional and popular music of the Cape Verde Islands, Joao Cerilo regularly entertains large audiences at festivals and in the more intimate setting of local clubs. An internationally known musician, Mr. Cerilo has performed at a number of world music festivals and recorded several CDs. He performs in the “funana” and “batuku” styles on accordion, keyboard and other instruments.
This year’s Thursday in the Park Concert Series is co-sponsored by the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, a new non-profit organization dedicated to telling the story of the City’s commercial fishing industry.
