City man wants to spread awareness about dangerous New Bedford intersection after serious accident

“I need some help spreading awareness about this super dangerous intersection that is gonna get someone killed.

I was in a bad accident with my kids yesterday. I have always been a cautious driver who used to carry a Class A CDL. It’s the new intersection in the north end next to Joe & Perkey’s Service Station, and Pa Raffa’s.

My daughter lives on Belair Street and to turn left with a green light is going to get someone killed. It very well could have been us if I didn’t stop in time. The police, tow trucks, and everyone else told me that since there are numerous accidents there, someone is going to lose their life if changes aren’t made it’s so dangerous.

Please help spread awareness to get people to discuss it. The police told me good luck with this as it’s the DoT’s responsibility.” -Brad Clark.

  1. This intersection is the jurisdiction of the City of New Bedford, not MassDOT. The New Bedford PD should probably have more awareness about which intersections are under local jurisdiction and not be so quick to attempt to shift blame and avoid responsibility by throwing other agencies under the bus. With the new configuration of this intersection, the City should consider restricting northbound left turns to Belair Street.

  2. There are several bad spots in the city. The new roadway on MountPleasant (where it splits into two lanes) there is no sign saying who has the right of way when it switches back to one lane. The other illegal intersection in the city is entering the industrial park, 6 way with only stop signs.

  3. What they need to do especially if you are heading Southbound is to remove the 4 traffic lights and reduce it to 3. 1 with left arrow into Cumberland Farms. 1 arrow pointing toward Acushnet Ave and 1 arrow pointing straight up for Ashley Blvd. The should also place a sign above or below each one stating what each one is for. This alone would possibly reduce many accidents. People are getting into the Cumberland Farms lane thinking it’s for Acushnet Ave.

  4. This is ridiculous, the car that hit that mustang with the kids inside was not insured!! I feel bad for that Father and his kids, the uninsured motorist needs to be sued along with whoever designed this road!!

I thought it was illegal not to have insurance in mass. He should sure that guy in civil court but good luck getting money from someone with no money for INS. Dept of MV should take away his license.. If you can’t obey the rules, you can’t play.
