24-year old Nathanael Genao of New Bedford was one of five men arrested for the drug-related shooting death of 17-year-old Brandin Guerrero of New York.

Also charged with murder and robbery in the killing are Emanuel Ramos, 30, of Roxbury, Massachusetts; Juan Ortiz, 21, of Concord, New Hampshire; and Nathaniel Kerruish, 24, of East Machias. The fifth defendant, Jorge Luis Pagan-Sanchez, 42, of Taunton, Massachusetts, already pleaded guilty to charges of murder and robbery on Jan. 4.

On November 4, 2021, the five men are accused of ambushing Guerrero who was believed by them to be part of the Bloods gang and allegedly had drugs to sell stored in his backpack.

After the shooting, Genao, Ramos, Pagan-Sanchez, and Ortiz all fled to different states. Nearby residents reported the gunshots and that cars could be seen speeding away from the scene. Guerrero’s body was not found until the next morning.

Two weeks later later, Genao was arrested at his home in New Bedford. Ortiz and Ramos were arrested in Fort Worth, Texas and Pagan-Sanchez was arrested on Dec. 3 in Taunton, Massachusetts.

Genao was facing up to 60 in prison but pled guilty to murder and robbery after reaching a deal with prosecutors. On Tuesday, Justice Nancy Mills sentenced Genao to 22 years in prison with all but 13 years suspended, and four years of probation.

Two other defendants in the case, Ortiz and Ramos, are tentatively scheduled to go to trial in May on their murder and robbery charges.
