“On Friday, March 31, 2023, at approximately 9:49 am. the Onset Fire Department was notified by a 911 caller of a utility crew that had struck a gas line on Holly Street in the vicinity of #14.
The Onset Fire Department responded, and upon the arrival of Fire Chief Jeffrey R. Osswald, he determined that a significant plume of gas vapor was affecting multiple residences in the area. Units were immediately tasked with evacuating residents in the affected area, which grew in size as the incident grew in complexity.
Wareham Police Officers Pillsbury and Verhagen, under the command of Sergeant Noble were instrumental in the initial evacuation efforts. Additional resources were summoned to assist, as the gas company indicated an extended time frame to secure the leak safely. Wareham Fire Department with Engine 1, Rescue 1, Assistant Chief Haskell, and Chief Kelley, along with Plymouth Engine 4, Bourne Engine 121, Wareham EMS, Wareham Emergency Management, and the Department of Fire Services Rehabilitation unit assisted at the scene.
Marion Engine 1 provided coverage at Onset Fire Headquarters during the incident.
Once National Grid was able to secure the leak and make repairs, all residences in the affected area were rechecked for the presence of a hazardous environment and deemed safe for re-entry in conjunction with National Grid employees. All residents were allowed back into their homes, and the incident was terminated at approximately 2:38 pm.
