UPDATE: State Police Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash on I-195

Last night at approximately 8:30 p.m., troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Dartmouth Barracks responded to reports of a single car crash on I-195 West in the vicinity of Exit 4B in Somerset. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2004 Toyota struck a pedestrian who was walking in the roadway.

The specific facts and circumstances remain under investigation with the assistance of troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and State Police Detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. The operator of the vehicle, 55 year-old HORACIO GONCALO of Fall River was arrested and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol.

Additional charges may follow based upon the investigation. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His name is not being released, pending notification of family members, and is not anticipated to be released tonight. Troopers were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Somerset Police Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highways Division.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.

UPDATE The operator of the Toyota, HORACIO GONCALO, is not being charge with any additional charges at this time. The pedestrian that was struck and killed has been identified as 43 year-old ROBERT PAVAO of Fall River.
