New Bedford saw a nearly 75% increase in overdoses last year and that trend continues in 2017 as three suspected overdoses occurred on Wednesday, 11 Jan, 2017.

A 63-year old New Bedford man overdosed at 4:56pm on Hillman Street. He was given Narcan by a female party on scene before being transported to St. Luke’s hospital.

A 55-year old New Bedford female overdosed at 5:50pm in front of the New Bedford Fire Department headquarters on Pleasant Street. She was given Narcan by New Bedford fire fighters before being transported to St. Luke’s hospital.

New Bedford police responded to a motor vehicle accident at Belleville Ave and Sawyer Street around 8:10am. A 40-year old man was cited and charged with OUI drugs. He was transported to hospital for further assessment and treatment. No evidence of drug use was found and no Narcan used. He was charged based on observations from the responding officer and medics on scene.

New Bedford police charged 26 drivers with OUI drugs in 2016, or roughly one every 2 weeks.
