On Thursday at approximately 4:40 pm, New Bedford EMS, Police, and Fire Departments responded to reports of a school bus being involved in an accident on Ashley Boulevard.

Upon arrival, responders found that the bus operated by Global Charter was carrying approximately 30 students from 5th to 12th grade and that six of the students had received minor injuries.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of a car had gone through a stop sign on Chaffee Street and struck the bus which had right of way.

Workers from an auto body shop near the site of the accident, 508 Sport and Luxury, heard the accident and screaming kids. Surveillance video from the shop showed the bus coming to a stop, a plume of smoke rises behind it, and the auto body shop’s owner Kevin Ducharme and workers running to the scene to assist.

Ducharme said he came upon a chaotic scene with many kids shouting and screaming as they exited through the bus’s back door. He could see kids inside the bus that were knocked out of their seats from the impact.
