“On November 8, 2022, the residents of New Bedford and Fall River voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority and bringing the commuter rail to their respective cities. The ballot referendum passed with 80% of New Bedford and 78% of Fall River residents voting in favor.

The Rail-to-Boston Coalition has been advocating for the SouthCoast Rail since its inception 10 years ago. “The Rail-to-Boston Coalition was formed to bring the voices and concerns of the non-existent passenger rail service from SouthCoast residents, businesses, and municipalities to Beacon Hill,” states Chairperson, Paul Chasse. “Last night’s clear mandate by the residents of New Bedford and Fall River further exemplifies the need and desire for rail service to the area and we look forward to the project’s completion in the fall of 2023.”

With the approval of the referendum, the rail will have stops in the cities of New Bedford and Fall River, in addition to Taunton, which are the last large cities within 50 miles of Boston that do not currently have rail access. SouthCoast rail will provide the residents of New Bedford and Fall River access to healthcare, education and training, and employment opportunities. In addition, SouthCoast area small businesses will benefit from increased tourism and economic opportunities. Rail Stops are expected to be operational in the fall of 2023.

Residents can find more information at www.railtoboston.com or facebook.com/railtoboston. Passengers can also stay connected with the Commuter Rail by following @MBTA_CR on Twitter or by calling customer service at 617-222-3200.”
