New Bedford’s Department of Community Services, the Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District, and Doc Shredding Corp. are partnering for a paper shredding day in downtown New Bedford. The event will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Shredding confidential documents helps to prevent identify theft, protect personal information, and prevent valuable resources from being sent to the landfill.

“Identity theft is a growing concern. Everyone must be vigilant in protecting personal information. Shredding your documents is an excellent way to protect yourself and your family,” said John Lobo, Neighborhood Liaison, Department of Community Services.

Businesses and residents of New Bedford, Dartmouth, and all communities are welcome. The paper shredding charge is $5 per box. Cash or check only. Each box should weigh no more than 30 to 40 pounds.

The shredding event will be held at the parking lot across from City Hall on the corner of William Street and North 6th Street (enter on William Street).

Participants are welcome to watch the destruction of up to two of their boxes of paper. For more than two boxes, shredding may occur off-site. Certificates of destruction are available, if needed. Paper clips and staples do not need to be removed, but please remove paper from folders and binders. Shredded paper will be recycled into new products such as paper towels.

In addition, the company will destroy old computer hard drives for a fee of $5.

For questions about the event please call the Department of Community Services at (508) 979-1692 or the Refuse District at (508) 979-1493.
