Wednesday, October 16: “Climate Change: From the Arctic to the Antarctic”

Global Voice returns to the Ocean Explorium on Wednesday, October 16, with a talk on “Climate Change: From the Arctic to the Antarctic” presented by Maurice Henderson of NASA Goddard Space Center. According to Mr. Henderson, the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps are the “canaries in the coal mine”, alerting us to hazardous environmental conditions.

“As an engineer and citizen scientist I have been driven to better understand the processes moving Earth’s climate, and determine what I can see as evidence for myself” Mr. Henderson stated. “During the talk we will discuss the major areas of Earth Systems science, and gain an understanding of how today’s Earth fits in history.” Mr. Henderson will use the Science on a Sphere® exhibit to look at the Earth’s unique position in the universe, and then examine the ocean and the cryosphere to see how they are changing.

Maurice Henderson is an education outreach specialist with NASA Goddard and currently supports the distribution of NASA science to the Science on a Sphere® (SOS) user community of museums and science centers. Mr. Henderson was instrumental in bringing the “New Views of the Universe: Hubble Space Telescope” traveling exhibit to the Ocean Explorium in the Fall of 2009. More recently, he installed a NASA Earth Observations (NEO) upgrade to the SOS, a teaching tool that permits Ocean Explorium education staff to display images from NASA’s vast collection, overlaid them with graphs and other data analytics. Mr. Henderson has traveled to both the Arctic and Antarctic, and his experiences in the polar regions bring an incredibly rich and personal perspective to his talk.

Ocean Explorium doors will open at 6:00 pm, and the talk will begin at 6:15 pm. Admission is $5 for members, $10 for non-members, $8 for Seniors, $3 for children. A reserved room and special menu will be available at Cork Wine and Tapas immediately following Global Voice for attendees who wish to continue the conversation.
