On May 28, 2021, at approximately 2am, north-end New Bedford police patrol units responded to 1623 Acushnet Ave. in response to a male brandishing a firearm. Upon arrival, officers were provided a description of the male who was then located seated in the rear of a nearby vehicle. The male was later identified as 25-year old Nilton Miranda.

Miranda disregarded repeated commands to display his hands and instead reached for a small bag that was on the seat next to him. Officers were able to safely remove him from the vehicle and discovered that the bag contained a Smith & Wesson .45 caliber automatic with one round loaded in the chamber.

Miranda was found to be highly intoxicated and had no license to possess the weapon. He was subsequently taken into custody and charged with carrying a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition and disturbing the peace. Miranda currently has an open case out of Brockton District court for possession of class A substance with intent to distribute. The arresting officer was Imari Soares.
