New Bedford Police received four separate calls Monday about bats in residences, on Ocean Street, Clifford Street, Smith Street and Union Street. From there Facebook page:

“Having a bat indoors may be unsettling but there are simple steps you can take to ensure the bat makes its way back outside safely.

Remember: The bat is at least as frightened as you are and only wants to escape. Close off the room where the bat is flying and open a window or exterior door. The bat uses sonar to find the opening and will in most cases make its way out quickly.

If the bat has landed on a solid surface, you can capture it in a coffee can or box, using thick leather gloves. (Not cotton gloves or bare hands) No Massachusetts bat can bite through thick gloves. Take the bat outside and release it.

The only exception is if you have any fear that the bat has made contact with a person or animal in the household. In that case, call the police department and keep track of the bat so animal control can capture it.

Bats should not be feared. Bats do not become entangled in hair and do not attack. They can eat 600 flying insects an hour, including mosquitoes, so they are helpful to have around.”
