One of the area’s most notorious breakers has been repeatedly picked up for targeting local vehicles for criminal activity since late April.

Michael Carreiro, 38, 33 S. Sixth St. was arrested four times since April 24 – two of those incidents occurring within 24 hours – and charged with multiple offenses for breaking into motor vehicles, receiving stolen property, destruction of stolen property and larceny of a credit card.

On April 24 Carreiro was arrested for outstanding larceny warrant. He was arraigned before Judge Joseph Harrington and released. Carreiro was arrested again on May 4 for breaking into motor vehicles in Dartmouth and receiving stolen property. Despite the District Attorney’s request that his bail be revoked for the April 24 charge and $1,000 bail added during his arraignment before Judge Harrington in New Bedford District Court, Carreiro was again released.

In just over 24 hours on May 8 and May 9, NBPD patrol officers arrested Carreiro in the south end.

A foot chase by NBPD patrol officers resulted in the May 8 arrest after spotting the suspect on W. Rodney French Blvd. with a bag appearing to be full of property. After a chase through several properties, Carreiro was apprehended and charged with 2 counts of malicious destruction of property, 2 counts of trespass, receiving stolen property.

Carreiro was arraigned and released on personal bail despite his lengthy criminal record for similar offenses by Judge Sabine Coyne at New Bedford District Court

Less than 24 hours later on May 9, NBPD spotted Carreiro again carrying a bag and acting suspiciously in the area of Winterville Rd. and Jacinto St. He was arrested and charged with interfering with a police officer, break and enter, and possession of stolen property.

Carreiro was arraigned again May 11 before Judge Harrington and this time bail was set for $1,000 and held on the previous two cases.

Carreiro has been arraigned 95 times in the past two decades with most offenses relating to breaking and entering and larceny. This includes 48 convicted cases and 35 defaulted court.
