An alert New Bedford man observed the suspect talking on a cell phone and pacing around the woman as she loaded the groceries. He then observed the suspect grab the purse and run northerly towards Riverside Park. The witness gave chase and caught up with him near Belleville Ave and confronted him. He told him that he should return the purse but the suspect turned and fled into nearby yards.

Officers Damien Vasconcellos, Robert Gomes, and Kyle Cabral searched the area and found the suspect in a rear yard on Holly St. with the pocketbook and all it’s contents nearby. (It was returned to the owner)

The suspect was placed under arrest and will be arraigned Monday morning in New Bedford District Court. He is facing a charge of Larceny from a person; Gregory McGuire age 31 of New Bedford.
