New Bedford High School Marching Band Takes Divisional First Place in Regional Competition

New Bedford High School Whaler Marching Band earned First Place in Division 3 with caption awards for Best Percussion & Best Music at the 33rd Annual New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) Competition, which took place on October 14 at McCoy Field. The competition attracted school bands from across southeastern Massachusetts.

Under the baton of director Matt Pacheco, the Whaler Marching Band received an overall score of 84.0, an improvement of over 8 points from their last competitive performance.

“New Bedford is proud of these young musicians and the dedication that they and their families display in their commitment to hours of daily rehearsals,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “It also underscores the dedication of Mr. Pacheco and the staff at the high school to excellent performing arts and music. Once again, the band’s hard work has paid off and brought honors back to New Bedford High.”

Headmaster Bernadette Coelho congratulated the band. “Our Whaler Marching Band is a great asset to New Bedford High School. These talented students are examples of perseverance and represent countless hours of teamwork and self-discipline with a steadfast determination to excel. We are extremely proud of their amazing accomplishments.” she said.

The NBHS Whaler Marching Band will be performing at the New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) Fall Marching Band Championships on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Lawrence Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Mass.
