“It is our pleasure to announce that 12 of our New Bedford firefighters have been chosen by the Heroic Awards Committee through Governor Baker’s Office. They are:

• FF Joshua Charbonneau
• LT Kevin Cormier
• LT Derek DaCosta
• LT Michael Dillon
• CPT Robert Ferreira
• CPT Kurt Houghton
• FF Robert Kirby
• FF Richard McCue
• LT Antonino Miraglia
• LT Christopher Mount
• FF Steven Mourao
• FF Matthew Perry

These 12 members were nominated for this prestigious award by Acting Chief Scott Kruger and will be honored for their acts of heroism and bravery at the 31st Annual Firefighter of the Year Awards Ceremony. Usually, this event is live and Governor Baker presents the awards to recipients from across the Commonwealth.

However, due to the pandemic, this year’s event will be a virtual one. We invite the entire community, co-workers, family, friends, and loved ones to watch this ceremony with us as it premiers this Monday, March 8, 2021, at 10:30 AM. The virtual ceremony can be viewed here on Facebook:

(https://www.facebook.com/MassDFS/) or on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/DFSOSFM). After that, it can be viewed on these platforms and at https://www.mass.gov/servi…/firefighter-of-the-year-awards. We will also be planning an in-person ceremony for our members and their loved ones when it is safe.

“The Department would like to congratulate these twelve members on their heroic actions at three separate structure fires which occurred in 2019 and 2020. In any situation involving the search and rescue of fire victims, there is no margin for error. This operation requires skill and coordination between everyone involved in the rescue and in all three instances, the victims were rescued within minutes of crews arriving on scene.

While we pause to congratulate these members, we are proud of and recognize the great work done by all the men and women of the New Bedford Fire Department.” -Acting Fire Chief Scott Kruger.
