From the New Bedford Fire Department:
“Yesterday at 4:48 pm New Bedford Fire Department Engine Co. 1 along with Command Unit 2 were dispatched to the intersection of Campbell and Pleasant Streets for “a female about to give birth.”
Upon arrival, both crews observed a female kneeling on the sidewalk exhibiting signs and symptoms of imminent childbirth. While awaiting a mutual aid ambulance to arrive the crew of Engine 1 set up a privacy shield so the patient could be quickly assessed to determine if a delivery would occur. At this point, it was determined the birth was imminent and members urgently prepared the woman for childbirth. Emergency Childbirth Kits from E-1 and Unit 2 were deployed.
Padding was placed underneath and around the mother to provide as clean of an environment as possible. At 4:57 pm Mom delivered a healthy baby boy weighing six pounds and nineteen inches long. The baby was stimulated, dried, warmed, and began spontaneous respirations within a minute. The cord was clamped and cut and the baby was bundled up with additional blankets to prevent further heat loss while awaiting the ambulance.
Mom and baby were transported to a local hospital without further incident. Congratulations to the family and a job well done by District Chief Kruger and the members of Engine Co. 1!”
