New Bedford Fire Department quenches garage fire on Coggeshall Street overnight

“At 11:20pm last evening, the NBFD responded to a garage fire behind 597 Coggeshall Street.

The one-story wood-frame garage consisted of eight bays with an open attic running its entire length was situated in the middle of the block. Upon arrival, crews were met with a large volume of fire extending from a unit near the middle of the structure.

The initial attack crews deployed a 2.5” hoseline to attack the fire while multiple crews opened up the roof to stop further extension of the fire to other units on either side. Engines 1, 7, and 8, Ladders 1 and 4 responded to the scene with Command Units 1 and 2.

No firefighters were injured however a male victim who attempted to extinguish the fire suffered smoke inhalation along with burns was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital by New Bedford EMS. Several exposed vehicles inside the garage units suffered damage. The fire is being investigated by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit and appears to be accidental at this time.”-New Bedford Fire Department.
