New Bedford fire fighters respond to fire in homeless encampment behind Building #19

New Bedford fire fighters responded to a fire yesterday in a man-made shelter in the wooded area behind Building #19 in New Bedford.

According the the New Bedford Fire Department, several man-made shanty structures were being warmed by a homemade wood burning furnace. A fire ignited some of the contents inside and many of the occupants fled the area before fire fighters arrived.

Tenants were informed of carbon monoxide poisoning and the device was disassembled by the fire department.
