A 35-year-old New Bedford man who violently assaulted his pregnant girlfriend and then attempted to intimidate her into committing perjury was sentenced to serve three to five years in state prison last Friday in Fall River Superior Court, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.
Adrien Camacho pleaded guilty to a multi-count indictment, charging him with aggravated assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, intimidation of a witness and attempt to suborn perjury.
On May 5, 2017, New Bedford Police were called to a city home for a report of domestic abuse. During an argument with his pregnant girlfriend, the defendant struck her several times in the face and head, and threatened to kill her while holding a knife to her face.
The defendant was arraigned the next day and held pending a dangerousness hearing. Before the dangerousness hearing began, the defendant called the victim twice from jail, telling her not to show up or if she does, what exactly to say.
At the time of the incident, the defendant was still on probation after being released from a prison for charges relating to a 2005 shooting in New Bedford.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Thompson, and the state prison sentence was imposed by Judge Renee Dupuis.
“This is a defendant who, while on probation, violently assaults his pregnant girlfriend,” District Attorney Quinn said. “Fortunately, we were able to obtain a conviction despite the defendant intimidating the victim into recanting her testimony. This defendant deserved to be locked up and off the streets.”
