Mayor Jon Mitchell and the City of New Bedford’s Department of Planning, Housing and Community Development celebrated National Community Development Week with multiple events during the week of April 22. This year marks the 45th Anniversary of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding in New Bedford.

New Bedford’s celebration of National Community Development week kicked off on Monday with an Official Proclamation by Mayor Mitchell recognizing the significant impact CDBG program has had on the city’s local economy through job creation and retention, physical redevelopment and improved local tax bases as well as its success in addressing pressing neighborhood and human service needs for low and moderate income persons.

National Community Development Week in New Bedford also featured two important events: a grand reopening of the Buttonwood Park Senior Center, and a Free Credit Workshop. Events kicked off on Thursday, with the grand reopening of the Buttonwood Park Senior Center where building renovations funded by the Community Development Block Grant program have now been completed. Over $400,000 in CDBG funding assisted with major exterior renovation including a new roof, all new windows and doors, and re-pointing of brick exterior and a handicap-accessible entrance. Interior repairs included all new bathrooms and updates to kitchen equipment and appliances.

Additionally, a Free Credit Workshop was held on Thursday in collaboration with the Fall River- New Bedford Housing Partnership. The Workshop was held at the Temple Landing Community Center located at 370 Middle Street in New Bedford, a previously funded HOME Investment Partnership Program project.
