At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday Troopers assigned to the Troop D Community Action Team were on patrol in New Bedford when they observed a Nissan sedan fail to signal a turn on Herman Melville Boulevard. They activated the cruiser’s blue lights and stopped the vehicle.

After the vehicle came to a stop the troopers began to approach it and observed the front seat passenger sit up in the seat and move something between his legs. He was later identified as TYRELL MARTIN, 19, of New Bedford. After speaking to the vehicle’s occupants for some time the troopers observed a small plastic baggie with a substance they believed to be cocaine. They asked MARTIN to step out of the vehicle in order to search the area where he was seated.

MARTIN was removed from the vehicle and placed under arrest. The operator was made aware of the narcotics then gave the troopers permission to search her vehicle. In total, the troopers discovered 43 grams of cocaine, approximately 3 ounces of marijuana, and nearly $800 in cash. MARTIN was transported to the Dartmouth Barracks where he was booked. A bail commissioner was contacted and ordered MARTIN to be held for court.

MARTIN was later transported to the Bristol County House of Correction pending his arraignment today at New Bedford District Court on the following charges:

• Trafficking in Cocaine; and
• Possession of a Class D Substance with Intent to Distribute.
