For its next three concerts, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra has a special offer for anyone who has never been to an NBSO concert: two free tickets. “The transformation of the NBSO over the last several years has been extraordinary yet our research shows that there are still many people who don’t know about us,” said NBSO CEO David Prentiss. “We want to ensure that everybody interested in classical music in our region has a chance to hear for themselves how good of an orchestra we are, and also to experience the world-class guest artists who perform with us.”

The orchestra’s next concert:

Feel the Heat as the NBSO Presents The Spanish Soul, featuring Classical Guitarist Jason Vieaux

New Bedford, MA –On Saturday, February 8 at 8pm at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, celebrated guitarist Jason Vieaux will perform Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and organist Paul Cienniwa will join the orchestra for Camille Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 (also known as the Organ Symphony) as the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra presents “The Spanish Soul.” Under the direction of Music Director David MacKenzie, the NBSO will also perform Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat Suite No. 2.

Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez was inspired by the 16th century gardens at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez in Spain. It is considered one of the greatest works of Spanish classical music and the guitar repertoire. Of the piece Music Director MacKenzie said, “The Rodrigo is very close to my heart. I first conducted it in Cali, Colombia, and immediately fell in love with the soulfulness and sensuality of the music…The second movement is, to me, the most beautiful slow-movement written in the twentieth century.”

Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony will be performed by Cienniwa on the Zeiterion’s Wurlitzer organ, which was originally installed in The Z in 1923, when the performing arts center was known as the State Theater. This is the first time in recent years the NBSO will feature the organ in a performance.

To learn more about the concert, please join Dr. MacKenzie for a free, informal talk on the evening’s program at 7pm in the Penler Space, adjacent to the theater.

Tickets are $20-$55, students always $10.
