Massachusetts police fatally shoot man allegedly wielding knife

“Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lexington Police Chief Michael McLean have confirmed an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred today at the intersection of North Hancock and Hancock Street in Lexington.

At approximately 12:38 p.m., Lexington Police received a 911 call from a male passerby reporting that a male was at the window of a home asking for someone to call 911 and stating that a man was trying to kill him. Lexington Police responded to the house, a facility run by Eliot Community Services, where the man was asking for help.

Upon arrival, police located a 35-year-old male who resides in the home, outside with a raised knife. The man refused multiple commands to drop the knife and reportedly continued to engage and advance on the officers moving about the property and into the street while holding the knife.

The Officers on scene attempted to stop the man, one officer fired multiple less-than-lethal beanbag rounds that, although they caused him to fall, he continued to get back up. When, according to witnesses, the man with the knife advanced on an officer that had fallen, a Lexington Police Officer fired his service weapon, striking the man. The man was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

This is an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Lexington Police and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call Lexington Police.” -Middlesex District Attorney.
