At approximately 10 PM Massachusetts State Troopers responded to reports of a vehicle that struck an abutment of the Otter River Road Bridge along Route 2 in Templeton. The crash resulted in the fatality of the operator.

Preliminary investigation by the State Police-Athol Barracks indicates that a 2013 Mazda 3 sedan was traveling east on Route 2 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle exited the roadway to the left and struck the concrete structure supporting the bridge. The operator and sole occupant was determined to be deceased on scene. He has been identified as a 36-year-old Athol man. His name is not being released at this time.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.

The eastbound side of Route 2 in the vicinity of the crash was closed for several hours to accommodate the rescue response and crash investigation. Troopers were assisted by Templeton Fire and Templeton and Phillipston Police. The scene was cleared at 2:31 AM.
