Last night, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Trooper Kyle Reed, assigned to the Troop H Community Action Team, was patrolling Route 24 southbound in Avon. As he was approaching Exit 19B he observed a blue Volvo V70 traveling very slow in the right travel lane. Trooper Reed closed distance on the vehicle and conducted an electronic RMV inquiry on the license plate. The results of the inquiry revealed the license plate status was revoked. It also revealed the plates should have been attached to a Hyundai Elantra. Trooper Reed activated his emergency lights and stopped the Volvo just prior to Exit 19B.

After the vehicle stopped, Trooper Reed approached the passenger side of the vehicle and immediately noticed six passengers in the vehicle which is designed for five. Three of those passengers were children, one of whom was an infant completely unrestrained. No child safety seats were present in the vehicle. The operator was identified as VINCENT HYATT, 49, of Dorchester.

Several cruisers responded to the scene in order to assist with transporting the passengers safely as the vehicle was not registered or insured and was going to be towed from the scene.

After all occupants were removed from the vehicle Trooper Reed conducted a tow inventory. During the inventory he located an improperly stored and loaded Smith & Wesson .38 special revolver in grabbing distance from any of the children in the vehicle. HYATT does not possess a license to carry firearms. He was immediately placed under arrest and secured in the back of a cruiser.

HYATT was transported to State Police-Milton where he was booked and bail was set at $25,000. He was later transported to the Dedham House of Corrections and is scheduled to be arraigned at Stoughton District Court tomorrow morning on the following charges:

• Possession of a Firearm;
• Carrying a Loaded Firearm;
• Possession of a Firearm with 3 Prior Violent/Drug Convictions;
