Multiple Massachusetts Fire Departments battle massive barn blaze started by lightning strike

“At 3:52pm, on May 28th, 2022, Stow Fire Department was dispatched for a reported lighting strike with smoke in the area of Kettell Plain Road.

Engine 14, staffed with the two on-duty full-time firefighters were already responding to a previous incident. Stow L2 was responding and noticed smoke showing from Athens Drive.

On arrival L2 located a vacant barn fully involved with exposures. A working fire was requested which brought an engine from Maynard, MA Fire Department, tanker from Bolton Fire-EMS and ladder from Hudson Firefighters Local 1713. Additional engines from Harvard Fire Department, and Acton Fire Local 1904, an ambulance from Sudbury Firefighters IAFF Local 2023, tankers from Boxborough MA Fire Dept., Harvard, and Berlin Fire & EMS Department were requested.

The gator from Bolton was requested to assist with moving personnel. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services rehab truck was also requested for members. A Lancaster engine responded to cover the town while all companies were committed. One firefighter was treated for minor injuries on scene. Fire District 14 investigation team assisted with the investigation of the scene.
