zeiterion-theatre-new-bedfordLate last week The Board of Trustees of the Zeiterion Theatre, Inc. (“The Z”) voted to enact a plan of internal restructuring in the context of creating a long-term viable financial plan. Unfortunately, this plan eliminated the position of Chief Executive Officer previously held by Katherine Knowles. This difficult decision was made after serious and lengthy deliberation and a review of all other options and alternatives. The Board’s central goal is to commit to delivering a superior level of arts and cultural performances to downtown New Bedford consistent with those achieved under Ms. Knowles’ leadership.

Board Chair Lawrence Hunt said, “The Board of Trustees appreciates all that Katherine has done for The Z and the community. Her achievements here have been an important part of New Bedford’s ongoing renaissance.”

Ms. Knowles has contributed greatly to the organization since she joined as its Chief Executive Officer nine years ago. With her world class programming and nationally recognized educational and community programs, Ms. Knowles has led The Z to become a cultural force in New Bedford and the region. Ms. Knowles has shared her unique vision and galvanized the spirit of the Southcoast. She will be missed. Ms. Knowles coordinated funding for the rehabilitation of the city-owned building. She was integral to negotiating a long-term contract with the City of New Bedford for the management services that The Z will continue to provide for other local arts and culture organizations. Thanks to Ms. Knowles, The Z has a first-rate staff highly capable of carrying on the mission of The Z.

Two long-term, senior-level staff members, Assistant Director/Director of Education Rosemary Gill and Director of Production and Facilities Justin LaCroix, are now Acting Co-Directors. They have assumed the daily operations of the theatre. The staff is continuing execution of an exciting and star-studded 2013-14 season, which will launch this summer.
